Dragon Ball Super Card Game Fusion World for beginners: how the game actually works

September 26, 2026

Housekeeping first: this is an unofficial fan site. We're not Bandai or Toei, and we don't speak for the card game's publishers — we're just fans who want you to understand the game.

Dragon Ball Super Card Game Fusion World is Bandai's streamlined one-on-one Dragon Ball TCG. If you've touched the older Masters game, Fusion World feels lighter: fewer zones, shorter turns, cleaner combat. You can teach it to someone in ten minutes.

Build your deck first. You need exactly one Leader Card plus 50 to 60 Battle and Extra cards. Your Leader's color decides everything: a red Leader means a red deck, because every card in your deck must share a color with your Leader. So pick a Leader whose style you like, then build around it.

Setup is quick. Shuffle, draw six cards for your opening hand (you may shuffle those six back and redraw once if you don't like them), then place the top eight cards of your deck face-down in your Life Area. The player going second starts with one energy marker. You win by doing one of two things: reduce your opponent's Life Area to zero cards, or run their deck dry.

Each turn has three phases. Charge Phase: stand all your resting cards back up, draw a card, and, if you want, tuck one card from your hand into your Energy Area. Main Phase: the meat of the turn — play cards, fire off Extra Cards and skills, attack. End Phase: resolve end-of-turn effects and pass to your opponent.

Two card states matter constantly. Upright is Active Mode, meaning ready to act. Rotate a card sideways to Rest Mode and it has acted: paying costs, attacking, and blocking all rest cards. Next Charge Phase wakes them up again.

Energy is your currency. You build it by charging one card per turn, then pay a card's cost by resting that many energy cards. Energy markers help too — remove one from the game to cover a cost in your Leader's color. More energy, bigger cards.

Attacking runs a mini-battle. Rest your Active Leader or Battle Card, pick a target — your opponent's Leader or a Rest Mode Battle Card — then both sides can push cards from hand into the Combo Area to boost their Power. Higher total Power wins; on a tie, the attacker wins. Beat the Leader and your opponent takes a life; beat a Battle Card and it's KO'd.

Finally, Awaken. When your Leader's condition is met — usually tied to losing life — flip it over for boosted Power and new skills. The condition is unique to each Leader, so read yours.
